First impressions matter, and curiosity shows you care.
Shaykh Abdallah often has people from all over the world coming up to him after his lessons to give salaams. One thing I've noticed is he always finds a way to praise the place the person is from. For example, once he was introduced to three gentlemen from Iraq and he said to them, "All of Arabic grammar is Iraqi, you have the Basra School, the Kufa school, and the Baghdad school...it's all Iraqi!"
I've noticed from my own experience as well that knowing even the basic geography of the place others call home is a great way to engender feelings of mutual respect and care. Some people I meet are astonished that I know that Islamabad is in the north and Karachi in the south. Other easy-ins are with food. I can always bring a smile to a Moroccan's face when I recall my first Ramadan eating Refissa at iftar. Somali ginger-tea is dope. Mansaf is challenging to finish. Nasi Lamak might be the best breakfast in the world. The list goes on.
Of course, one has to be sure they're not coming across as a know-it all or as someone who thinks they've got another place figured out. An illustration of this would people people who approach me in a rather presumptuous manner about Saudi Arabia, a place I've called home for the last 4 years, and seem to only want to use my proximity to confirm the narratives they have about the place.
That's really the crux of the issue; we deal with war, competing ideologies, and politics day in and day out, and while I'm the last one to advocate abandoning those engagements, sometimes you need to come down to earth and connect with the Ummah on the humble level of immediate experience: food, family, and place.
Allah said in Surah al-Hujuraat that He created us in such diversity in order that we may know one another. Taking the time to find out something about other unfamiliar places in the Ummah and saying positive things about those places can be a useful tool for base-level community building.
-Tom Facchine.

This barrage controls water flow in the River Indus for irrigation and flood control purposes. This barrage serves 2.351 million acres (951,400 hectares) besides diverting flows from Indus River to the Chenab River through Taunsa Panjnad (TP) Link Canal. The barrage also serves as an arterial road bridge, a railway bridge, and crossing for gas and oil pipelines, telephone line and extra high voltage (EHV) transmission lines.[6] In 2011, the rehabilitation of the Taunsa Barrage was blamed for devastation of the Muzaffargarh district during the 2010 Pakistan floods.[7] Critics blamed the rehabilitation of the barrage, alleging that it failed to raise its height and strengthen protective embankments, used dysfunctional computer control system of the hoist gates and ignored hill-torrent management.
